William Caxton, Game and Playe of the Chesse (1477). Caxton translated and revised a 14thC French version by Ferron and de Vignay, itself based on Jacques de Cessoles' 13thC Latin original. It is an allegorical commentary on life, rather than a book of rules for chess. See Companion Vol. I, “First of ye chekker sall be mecioune maid”.

The chapter headings in The Game of Kings and in Gemini are passages from this book.
